San Francisco Hotel Employees and Marriott Finally Reach a Tentative Agreement

One of the largest hotel strikes in decades came to an end today (Monday 12/3) after the strikers reached a tentative agreement for a new contract with Marriott. The 24-hours-a-day strike began on October 4th.

The hotel workers were on strike in front of seven large San Francisco hotels operated by Marriott: Courtyard Marriott Downtown, the Marriott Marquis, Marriott Union Square, the Palace Hotel, the St.Regis, the W and the Westin St. Francis. The picketers (approximately 2,500 workers) were demanding better health benefits, pay and job security. Details of the tentative agreement have not been released yet but are set to last through 2022 if the SF workers vote in favor of the contract. If so, they will return to work on Wednesday.

Some workers and picketers were interviewed by various news outlets today, where they expressed being ready to get back to work and feeling proud for raising the standards across the local industry.

Other Marriott hotels were also on strike, including Oakland, San Jose, San Diego, Detroit, Boston and a few locations in Hawaii, but their labor agreements had already been reached over the past few weeks. San Francisco was the last one still going.
