As a broadcast high school teacher for Oakland School for the Arts, graduation time for me is always bitter sweet, bitter because my students become a part of me, I pour into them with everything that I have, my broadcast classes are life learning classes as broadcast touches on every aspect of life itself. Sweet because I see those youth as our future and contrary to popular belief our students leave OSA empowered with skills that can change the world, in fact I always say to them “I am depending on you to make a difference.” There is one young man in particular that I want to shine a light on, his name is Leon Jones Jr., now I must admit when I first started noticing Leon I was a volunteer in the office at OSA and Leon would come in and out of that office as if he worked for the school, I would find myself saying “what class are you supposed to be in” lol he would always smile and give an answer ending with a “Yes, Ms. Delores” little did I know that that young man would end up being a most valuable asset to my future ventures at OSA. Leon Jones Jr. became the program Director for the radio station that I created for the school, this young man’s tenacity, drive and creativity was equal too if not surpassed some of the programmers I have worked for in my 25 year career, he hounded me daily including weekends with “Doctor Delores, I’ve got an Idea for a talk show,” or “Dr. Delores, let’s add….” he even changed my original program clock lol it amazed me to see how boldly he approached the job, this young man is a true game changer and he along with other youth like him will change the world for the better, they are our hope, our future. Go fourth and bless the world with your presence!
