Celebrating the Black History Maker, You Know.. Jessie B. Thompson My Dad

While in February we celebrate black historical figures for black history month, it is imperative that we honor, celebrate and share the black history makers that we know. Everyone knows someone who has in someone made contributions to the advancement of African Americans, now more than ever we should be sharing those stories with our young folk, it is our responsibility to the make sure the generations know the stories that have sustained, strengthen and kept us as a people for me it’s my family legacy. My parents, grandparents, great-grands, as well as a hosts of uncles, aunts, and cousins, have in some way made great contributions. I will never forget when one of my sister’s friends went to the National Museum of African American History and Culture and posted a picture asking “Hey Deborah isn’t this your dad?” we were all shocked and extremely proud to say the least when my Uncle Mayor Sylvester Turner who had been a Politian resenting the state of Texas for many years became the Mayor of Houston we celebrated and thanked the elders and ancestors for pathing the way for us to follow. Now it is your job to educate the youth in your family about the history maker you know, this will not only give them a sense of pride but a responsibility to continue the legacy. Celebrating the history maker you know.
