Celebrating the History Maker You Know Councilmember Lynette Gibson McElhaney

In honor of Black History Month I chose to celebrate the history makers that I know, today’s history maker is a true champion for the people Oakland Councilmember Lynette Gibson McElhaney represents district 3 known as the heart and soul of the town serving a second term Councilwoman McElhaney has made greats strides in the town, a 20-year leader in affordable housing with experience as an executive director for a housing nonprofit, she is known as a bridge builder and advocate that balances neighborhood needs with the need of the local economy to create jobs, expand opportunities, and increase access to retail and services for local residents. In 2015, She was named one of San Francisco Business Times’ “most influential women in Bay Area business.”

Lynette currently chairs the Council’s Finance and Management Committee. She also serves on the executive committees for the Youth Venutres JPA, the Coliseum Authority, the East Bay Economic Development Alliance (EDA), and the Alameda County- Oakland Community Action Partnership (AC-OCAP). Some of her chief accomplishments include:

The establishment of the first inter-jurisdictional task force to end sex trafficking of children.
The creation of a Proactive Rental Inspection service to ensure safe dwellings for families and their children and protect them for predatory landlords
Leading the efforts to preserve a $25 million public safety measure, Measure Z, which funds a holistic approach to improving public safety by investing in community policing along with prevention and intervention strategies to reduce gun-related violence
The creation of the Department of Violence prevention which seeks to implement community focused and community lead strategies to drastically reduce homicides, domestic violence, and the sexual exploitation of children
The establishment of the Black Arts Movement and Business District along the historic 14th Street Corridor
The implementation of the Compassionate Communities Pilot collaboration between the City of Oakland and Alameda County which created the first sanctioned, unsheltered community in the city.
In addition to her work as an elected leader she is a mentoring member of the International John Maxwell Team, where she provides leadership development training and coaching for Fortune 500 businesses and individuals, equipping youth and adults with the skills to lead and excel through troubled times.
