After eleven years without a new album, Akon is making a comeback with three records. His new Latin album El Negreeto dropped October 4 and his Afrobeat project, Akonda, arrives Friday. The “I Wanna Love You” singer will also drop a R&B/hip hop album, Konnect, on November 22, and he's especially proud of that record's lead single.
The 46-year-old singer says the song, “Benjamin,' is a sign of the times song about women who worship money, including C-notes bearing the face of Benjamin Franklin.
“This ‘Benjamin(s)’ record, to me is a very, very important record today that needs to be heard. I might not make too many fans from females because of it,” he tells ABC Audio. “The reason why the record is called ‘Benjamin’ is because, it’s almost like, she’s more in love with [the] Benjamin[s] than she is with her own partner.”
In the video, Akon is surrounded by dancers in a strip club, whose floor is covered by one hundred dollar bills.
“If her last name could be Franklin," he says about women who inspired the song, "she would definitely take it."
Akon also plans to release an all-star album titled The Kollaboration in December featuring Nicki Minaj, Ty Dolla $ign, Pitbull, and more.
