Mary J. Blige SHUT DOWN the BET Awards this year with not only an amazing 3 piece silver outfit, but she brought out A$AP Rocky and performed an emotional set singing ‘Set Me Free’ & ‘Love Yourself’. The original track featured a verse from Kanye West, but you know Mary had to get someone else with a different kind of flavor. After the performance, Jamie Foxx said what we all were thinking during the performance. He said, “She got that breakup body. You know when ladies breakup they’re in the gym like…” (making sit up and crunch motions with his body.)
New Edition, Old Edition, Young Edition, all of the boys who were a part of The New Edition Story mini-series on BET were the talk of the night! New Edition took home the well-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award and performed a couple of their classic songs “Mr. Telephone Man” and “If It Isn’t Love.” They even got the cast of The New Edition Story to perform some of their various hits and solo tracks for the audience. Ricky Bell said, “30-plus years in the music industry will chew you up and spit you out, but all six of us are standing onstage right now.” In case you missed the performance, click here.
This year, Chance the Rapper took home the award for Humanitarian of the year for donating $1 million to Chicago’s public school system. Even Michelle Obama had to step in and congratulate him on his efforts!! You know it’s a big deal when the former FLOTUS puts in her two cents. “We are so incredibly proud of you Chance. We have known Chance and his family since he was a wee little baby rapper, and it has been a thrill to watch him come into his own in so many different ways,” Michelle said. “Time and again, he has been standing up, speaking out and doing the work to get kids in our community the education they deserve.”
Actress Yara Shahidi from the hit TV show, Black-Ish, took time during her acceptance speech after winning the Young Stars Award, to celebrate Tamir Rice who would have turned 15 on June 25. She said, “I’d like to thank BET for celebrating our culture so beautifully when it isn’t being celebrated everywhere else as it should be. Today is Tamir Rice’s birthday and so amidst the celebration I’d love to honor his life. And thank you for supporting blackness and our contribution to society because this is so appreciated and so necessary for my generation to see.”

Maxwell reminds us all of how much we love and miss him when he performed ‘Gods’ at last night’s BET Awards!! The legendary R&B/neo-soul singer was so moved by his own performance that he dropped down to his knees and sang his heart out.
But the people who everyone was excited to see perform was Xscape. This was the R&B vocal group’s first show in nearly two decades!! No word as to if they are going to have a reunion tour, but they have a biopic in the works. Check out their performance below:
