Ledisi, CeCe Winans, Donnie McClurkin, Mary Mary and Gladys Knight pay tribute to Aretha Franklin
The legendary singer was honored with a Gospel tribute. As The Queen of Soul’s dear friend Gladys Knight, powerfully served up her rendition of “Amazing Grace,” there were those in the audience who were visibly moved. Some of the “You Tube” stars, newer hip artists and folks who have “never really listened to that kind of music before,” had tears streaming down their faces and I had a feeling that they weren’t quite sure why? The more seasoned artists (of which there were few) nodded their heads as if to say, “Finally, real voices!”
Her friend, Gladys Knight, began with a stirring rendition of “Amazing Grace.” The tribute then transitioned into more rollicking performances by the other artists with selections that harkened back to Franklin’s influential gospel roots. The tribute closed out the show.
