LA declares September 21st as Earth Wind & Fire Day: Celebrating a half-century of soul meets social consciousness

Earth Wind & Fire Yay!!

Do you remember the 21st night of September?  Love was changing the minds of pretenders… While chasing the clouds away!

The 21st day of September,  what a perfect day to honor “the Elements” Earth Wind & Fire!  After all they have been setting our souls on fire  for a half a century.  The band is booked for Tuesday, September 21 to play on the steps of City Hall where they will be honored in a ceremony deeming it “Earth Wind & Fire Day!”  This is a very special year for the band because they will also be celebrated at the  Kennedy Center Honors, the annual awards event meant to recognize artists and performers who’ve helped shape American culture. (This year’s other recipients are Sally Field, Linda Ronstadt, Michael Tilson Thomas and the folks behind “Sesame Street.”)

For me, it’s sooo exciting! I’ve always been a HUGE fan.  For my very first concert experience was seeing them at Berkeley Community Theatre, complete with David Copperfield pyrotechnics (Yes David worked for them in the early days)  and bass player extraordinaire, Verdine White flying in from the ceiling. it was more then my 15 year old heart could stand but it set the bar very high for any subsequent concert performances that I would see in the future.

It was 1969 when drummer Maurice White brought the members of the “Denver Horns” and the ‘Salty Peppers” together and created the band’s name from their astrology signs (No water signs in this band!).  It was also Maurice’s idea to design a band to “render a service to humanity.”   They have more than succeeded.  For 50 years they have funked us up and expanded our minds with their soul meets social consciousness message of hope.

No doubt Maurice will be playing his Kalimba in spirit, on that 21st day of September and our love for EWF will be changing hearts of pretenders…While chasing the clouds away!
