Luther Vandross sang about “What the world needs now is love sweet love.” Mary J Blige sang about “Real Love” searchin’ for something to set my heart free!” In the good book we refer to the Greatest Commandment- Yep, according to the teachings of Christ, if we get these two right we can hang up the others: 1. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: 2. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Now that’s LOVE!
If we look to the ancient Greeks there are 3 types: Eros= Romantic love. Philos= Brotherly/Sisterly love or the love we have for Parents or children. Agape= as universal love, charity it’s the love inside us that we give freely to others—regardless of our relationship to them. The whole idea of agape love is that we don’t need to even have met the other person before, but we still want to help them, cooperate with them, or do good deeds towards them.
Oh if we would only teach our children well to love. If we could only express what’s in our hearts. If only we could adopt the Great Commandment. If only we could not only practice Eros or romantic love but that Agape Love…Wouldn’t our world would be a much better place to live in?
